Sustainability metrics to inform policy makers
APPLiA engaged dss+ to provide an analysis of the environmental impact of production processes, materials and circular economy performance of members.
Context
APPLiA is a Brussels-based trade association with 25 direct members. Contributing €79 billion added value to GDP, and having 1 million people directly and indirectly employed in the sector, the home appliance industry helps to enable and accelerate Europe’s digital and green transition, and establish Europe as the no.1 hub for clean technology.
Challenge
To comply with the diverse and rapidly evolving legislation that targets the home appliance industry, APPLiA needed to demonstrate sustainability achievements of its members in both production processes and products. The industry also wanted to preserve its manufacturing competitiveness in the EU, support with data and evidence policy decisions.
Solution and methodology
APPLiA engaged dss+ to provide an analysis of the environmental impact of production processes, materials used in the home appliance manufacturing sector in Europe and the circular economy performance of members, including repair activities and management of products reaching the end of life.
dss+ engaged with each of the 25 members to conduct case studies, gather data via surveys and interviews to develop a set of consistent and coherent KPIs and metrics to be monitored annually. Data representing 4.9 Mt of materials used in appliances in the EU market collected and analysed, including 291 data points on production efficiencies in the period of 2011-2021.
"It is evident from the data that production efficiency has made constant improvements, as observed over the 2011-2022 period."
– Federico Magalini, Director of Electronics & Tech Industry, dss+
