Measuring the carbon impact of the run-of-river power station throughout it's lifecycle
Context
The Massongex-Bex-Rhône (MBR) project is a run-of-river hydro infrastructure. It aims to achieve three objectives: to preserve biodiversity, secure energy supply, and decarbonise energy. In the context of its construction, dss+ supported MBR by measuring pre-construction carbon impact of the entire infrastructure’s lifecycle, which is estimated to be at least 80 years.
Challenge
Measuring carbon impact before commissioning requires an in-depth knowledge of the fundamental use of the infrastructure, which can only be accomplished in a close collaboration with the client. MBR needed to have an exhaustive understanding of the carbon footprint resulting from the project, to assess and validate working hypotheses, and ensure consistency of the results.
Solution
First, dss+ and MBR jointly defined the full project scope and carefully integrated data and addressed equipment maintenance, compensatory zones, and access roads across the entire life cycle of the hydro infrastructure. Thanks to dss+ background in construction and expertise in sustainability, the assessment brought MBR a deep understanding of their carbon energy impact from a holistic point of view.
Assignment
Pre-construction carbon impact assessment.
Offering
Sustainability assessment and guidance.
Impact
- Upskilling team’s knowledge around carbon impact.
- Improve project’s sustainability before the start of the construction phase.
“dss+ helped us to understand the carbon impact of each part of the project and ensured that we can present a consolidated carbon footprint today. Their recommendations will guide us to optimise our power plant with real low-carbon energy production.”
– Julien Derivaz, Director MBR
