Scoping environmental performance for a special economic zone
Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are designated geographic areas supported through special incentives and regulations that may be different to surrounding areas. For one such SEZ, established to serve as a leading logistics hub in the Middle East, our client in collaboration with the government was seeking support in developing environmental regulations and concepts promoting circularity.
Challenge
As one of the world’s largest electronics manufacturers, in collaboration with the government, the client wanted to operate in line with highest environmental and circularity standards establishing these standards as regulations for the SEZ overall to minimise negative impact on the environment from the vast operations related to the SEZ. dss+ was approached to assist with formulating a vision of environmental excellence and an action plan for the SEZ, with a major focus on circular economy aspects.
dss+ Approach
In order to assist the client, dss+ conducted a thorough environmental scoping, which consisted of the following elements:
- Assessment of national environmental regulations and SEZ environmental plans and aligning with international best practices
- Benchmarking the SEZ with global best-in-class SEZs that have demonstrated excellence in environmental performance
- Development of strategic environment vision for the SEZ with short, medium and long-term objectives
- Development of an environment action Plan for SEZ with focus on circular economy and other areas being renewable energy, energy efficiency, waste management and pollution prevention and control
- Identification of potential financing mechanisms to support implementation of the environment action plan.
